Southwold

The second No.1

For the opening of the line in 1879, the company ordered 3 identical 2-4-0 tank locomotives. With takings failing to meet the debenture interest payments, the original No. 1 was retuned to the makers in 1883. Later in 1893 a loco of a revised design, this time a 2-4-2 was ordered and this became the second No.1 Southwold.

Moving slightly away from the original, I've purchased an outside framed steam loco to act as the basis of my Southwold Model.

Loco as purchased

An Accucraft Lynn, purchased second hand, will have a new body in time. This model is re-gaugable between 32mm and 45mm which means I'll have something to run when I visit 32mm gauge lines. The main driving wheels can slide on their axles, there are dimples drilled in the axles to mark the correct gauges. The wheel sets in the front and rear pony trucks have to be swapped over. The rear one is a cinch but the front one has a recessed fixing which, as supplied, will not allow a socket spanner to go fully over the bolt.

After a little judicious grinding, the recess gap is enlarged so that the nut runner (supplied by Accucraft with the Ruby kit) will engage with the bearing securing bolt.
